Cable: Digital Transition

Analog TV signals sent through the air by Broadcasters like ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX will be turned off February 17, 2009.

Knology will be transitioning 26 of our 67 Analog channels to a Digital-only format starting June 2nd, 2008.

Unlike many other cable operators, Knology has chosen to keep the more popular channels available without the need for a cable box on every TV. The number of channels available on TV's without a box will be reduced by 26 starting June 2nd, 2008. We are completing our digital transition now in order to avoid the confusion that is likely to occur during the Broadcaster's deadline for conversion in February 2009.

Our Digital Transition will happen June 2nd, 2008

Q: What does this mean to you?

A: If you have a digital box, like 90% of our customers already do, then the TV you have the digital box hooked up to will get all the same channels it does today plus some new ones.

If you don't have a digital box, or you have some TVs without a digital box, the number of channels you will be able to watch on those TVs will be reduced from 63 channels down to the following 37 channels.

Q: What are all of my package options and how many channels do I get with each?

A: You can view a detailed layout of each package and its corresponding channel allocations by clicking Here

Q: Why is Knology making this change?

A: In February 2009, Broadcasters such as ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and PBS must stop distributing their signal in an analog format. While this ruling applies only to over-the-air broadcasters, the FCC has strongly encouraged Cable TV operators to transition to all-digital distrubution as well. Knology has chosen to keep some channels in an analog format, at our own expense. We have done so to allow our customers to keep using their older TVs and TVs with only an analog tuner to view 34 of the more popular channels.

Q: What about the Digital Converter boxes the Government is offering?

A: The two $40 vouchers to buy digital converter boxes from Radio Shack, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and other Consumer Electronics retailers are built only to pull in the over-the-air digital broadcast signals. They are specifically built so cable companies, satellite companies and other multi-channel subscription TV providers are not able to use them to carry their signals. If you are a Knology TV customer you will not need one of these devices to view TV. Knology is converting the local broadcaster's digital signals back to analog for your convenience. If you are interested in getting a digital converter to receive over-the-air broadcast signals for your analog TV or for more information on the Broadcaster's Digital Transition go to http://www.dtv.gov/

Q: What are my options for TV service after the Digital Transition?

A: You have several options for TV service at Knology to meet the needs of you and your family whether it is the basics or a full High Definition lineup soon to have over 70 channels of real HD programming.

  4. DVR: High Definition Dual-Tuner: $14.95

Q: Do i still need a box if my TV has a digital Tuner built into it?

A: You do not need a digital box to receive many of the channels in our lineup currently. This will change in the near future as we are being required by most cable networks to encrypt most of the channels with exception of the broadcast channels such as ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX. Also, you will notice if you are picking up the channels through your digital tuner that they are in strange places such as 118.7 for example. The reason for this is that we often move around our channels in those open frequencies to ensure the best quality of performance for our video distribution. Our digital converter boxes are set to match these frequencies to the channels we dictate on our published channel lineup. A digital tuner built-into a TV is not smart enough to do this. A cable card can be used to un encrypt the channels instead of a using a digital box if your TV has a slot for a cable card. It is important to note though, even with a cable card installed there are still drawbacks as a cable card, similar to just using the built-in digital tuner, requires a channel discovery to be run from your TV menu each time we change a background frequency.

Q: Why is Knology doing their digital transition now instead of waiting until February when the government requires the others?

A: There were several factors considered when June was chosen as the time to make this transition. Some of those include:

  1. We wanted to have our digital transition complete before the talk and confusion begins with the nation broadcaster's digital transition.
  2. The end of the TV viewing season normally occurs in May when re-runs begin of major shows.
  3. Our least busy time of year is at the beginning of june when the University of Kansas summer begins.
  4. Many cable companies will begin talking about going 100% digital in the next few months meaning they will require a box on every TV. We wanted to avoid confusion with these companies who unline Knology have chosen to not keep any analog channels available to TVs without a box.
